Blood donation is a voluntary and non-remunerated act in Brazil. Not infrequently, blood banks face difficulties to manage the supply of blood products, so campaigns for urgent blood donation are very common. In this regard, the Health System Operations Management Research team at UFERSA developed a blood supply management system called DOAR (Portuguese word for donate). The system was presented in 8 August and it is already in use at the blood bank in Mossoró, state of Rio Grande do Norte.

Professor Breno do Carmo, head of the research team, says the system can help blood banks to size the list of blood products and contact donors as soon as there is need for a specific blood type. Also, Do Carmo says the team aims at developing additional functions to the system. They aim to enable the system to contact the donors automatically, schedule of blood product request from hospitals, and connect different blood banks in the state for them to interchange blood products.
